MOSCOW, October 10 (R-Sport) — Three-time Stanley Cup winner and Detroit Red Wings legend Sergei Fedorov is to mount a surprise comeback at the age of 43, a source with knowledge of the situation told R-Sport.

Fedorov is the general manager of Russian KHL team CSKA Moscow but will suit up as a player for their upcoming game with Metallurg Magnitogorsk - one of his former teams - on Friday.

“Sergei Fedorov has decided to play,” the source said, without explaining the six-time NHL All-Star’s reasoning.

Fedorov was one of the dominant centers in the NHL in the 1990s and early 2000s, scoring 483 goals and 696 assists in 1,179 regular-season games.

He started his career with CSKA and moved to the NHL in 1990, where he spent the next 13 seasons with Detroit.

Less successful spells followed with the Anaheim Ducks, Columbus Blue Jackets and Washington Capitals before Fedorov returned to Russia, spending three seasons with Metallurg before his retirement at the end of the 2011-12 season.
