MOSCOW, October 22 (RIA Novosti) - An NBC News cameraman diagnosed with the Ebola virus while working in Liberia, has been cured of the deadly disease and will go home on Wednesday.
"Just got my results. Three consecutive days negative. Ebola free and feeling so blessed. I fought and won, with lots of help. Amazing feeling," the photojournalist, Ashoka Mukpo announced on his Twitter.
A blood test from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed the freelance photojournalist was free of the deadly virus, according to NBC News. Mukpo will be allowed to return home to Rhode Island Wednesday after staying in the Nebraska Medical Center's biocontainment unit for treatment since October 6.
Mukpo is one of eight Americans diagnosed with the Ebola virus to date. Americans infected with the deadly disease include Nina Pham, a Dallas nurse who contracted the virus while caring for patient, Thomas Eric Duncan, who died on October 8. Pham's status has been upgraded to good condition, according to the National Institutes of Health.
The current Ebola outbreak began in southern Guinea in the beginning of this year and later spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Senegal, with several Ebola cases having been reported outside of West Africa, including the United States.
According to the latest estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO), in total, Ebola has infected some 9,000 people and killed over 4,500 people.
