MOSCOW, September 6 (RIA Novosti) - Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has congratulated Moscow on its 867th birthday saying that Russia’s principal city is a dynamic and modern European capital.

“Moscow preserves its past, its unique cultural environment, being at the same time a modern European capital,” the Prime Minister stated during the opening ceremony that kicked off the Moscow City Day celebrations.

Medvedev added that the capital remains the brightest image of Russia, its symbol, its rich cultural and historical heritage.

“Like any global city, Moscow proves its leading positions with action. One can say that each year a new city populated by 150,000 people is being built in Moscow. Those are modern neighborhoods, schools, nurseries, grocery stores, offices. The city is growing and the New Moscow has become part of its newest history. In several decades over 1 million people will live comfortably and work in that area,” Medvedev said.

On September 6-7, Russia’s capital celebrates the Moscow City Day with thousands of events that take place in parks, theaters, museums and streets. Festivities will culminate with spectacular fireworks set to go off at 22:30 Moscow time (18:30 GMT) and expected to last eight minutes.
