Moscow is not discussing the return to G8, which ended its work amid the political crisis in Ukraine, but Russia remains open for contacts and cooperation, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday.

MOSCOW, June 4 (RIA Novosti) – Moscow is not discussing the return to G8, which ended its work amid the political crisis in Ukraine, but Russia remains open for contacts and cooperation, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday.

“There is no such format at the moment, so there is no issue for discussion. Russia is open for cooperation. If our partners send certain signals, then we will have what to discuss,” Dmitry Peskov said.

Russia will continue to participate in G20 work anyway, Putin’s aide added.

Tensions between Russia and the West rose after the ouster of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in February, followed by the rise to power of Ukrainian nationalist politicians in the new government in Kiev, which Moscow considered as illegitimate.

On March 24 G7 the leaders of the G7 countries issued a joint declaration in The Hague saying they would not participate in the June G8 summit in Russia’s Sochi and in the April G8 meeting of foreign ministers in Moscow. The declaration attacked Russia’s position over the crisis in Ukraine and the support for the Crimean Republic that has opted to secede from Ukraine and rejoin the Russian Federation.
