MOSCOW, February 12 (RIA Novosti) - Border guards in the southern Russian republic of Daghestan have detained two people on charges of attempting to sell two girls into sex slavery in Bahrain, the Federal Security Service (FSB) said Thursday.

The two girls, both in their late teens and from another North Caucasus republic, Kabardino-Balkaria, were stopped during passport control for a flight from Daghestan's capital of Makhachkala to the city of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.

A probe established that the girls were deceived into leaving their home town of Prokhladny in Kabardino-Balkaria. Upon their arrival in the UAE, the girls were to be transported to Bahrain and sold into prostitution.

The people detained were a woman believed to be a member of an international human trafficking group, and her accomplice, a police officer from the girls' home town.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said in a report that human trafficking brings profit of about $32 billion annually.

The true scope of human trafficking is unknown, but around 2.5 million people worldwide are estimated to be held in forced labor, including sex slavery. Sexual exploitation is behind some 80% of all cases of human trafficking.
