The Kremlin has no right to assess the failed constitutional referendum in Italy, but highly values the role of Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi,, who announced he was stepping down, in the Rome-Moscow cooperation, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – On Sunday, Italians voted on whether the national constitution should be amended to curtail Senate powers and speed up the lawmaking process. The referendum was widely seen as a test of leadership of Renzi, who announced his resignation.

"The referendum is a completely internal affair of Italy. We do not have the right and we do not want to make any assessments on this issue … As far as Mr Renzi is concerned, his role in development of Russian-Italian relations, even in difficult times in recent years, cannot be overestimated," Peskov told reporters.
