Russia does not bear responsibility for the significant downturn in its relations with the United States, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Since 2014, relations between Russia and the West have soured amid the crisis in Ukraine. Brussels, Washington and their allies have introduced several rounds of anti-Russia sanctions since Crimea became part of Russia in 2014 and over Moscow's alleged involvement in the conflict between the pro-independence eastern Ukrainian militias and Kiev.

Russia has repeatedly refuted the allegations, warning that the Western sanctions are counterproductive and undermine global stability.

"In recent years, unfortunately you and I know that Russian-US relations have deteriorated considerably, but it is not our fault," Putin said at the Primakov Readings International Forum.

The Primakov Readings International Forum that took place in Moscow on November 28-30 focused on the examination of the legacy of Yevgeny Primakov, Russia's prime minister in 1998-1999, who passed away last year.

Vladimir Putin also said that he and US President-elect Donald Trump had agreed during a recent phone conversation that it was necessary to rectify the current poor state of bilateral ties.

"During a recent telephone conversation with Mr. Donald Trump, we agreed that the current unsatisfactory condition of the Russian-American ties should certainly be rectified. As I have already said, our country is ready to travel its part of the path."

"As I have already said, Russia is ready to do its part," Putin said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin added that there is a chance for improvement of Russia-US relations after Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential elections.

"Now, after the US election campaign is over and the White House will soon see the new president, I would like to believe that there will be a chance to improve relations, which are important not only for the two countries' nations but also for ensuring international stability and security."
