Steinmeier Considers New Anti-Russian Sanctions to Complicate Syrian Crisis

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier opposed the imposing of the new anti-Russian sanctions amid situation in the Syrian Aleppo as it would complicate the resolution of the humanitarian crisis in the region, local media reported.

“Sanctions are not effective concerning the humanitarian crisis in Syria, because they have a deferred effect and cannot establish a humanitarian corridor, on the contrary, they may halt the necessary negotiations,” Steinmeier told the German ARD channel.

Steinmeier stressed the necessity to concentrate on the measures to support civilians, especially in Aleppo, including establishing of humanitarian corridors and imposing a long term ceasefire, according to the channel.

On Thursday, media reported that the leaders of the European Union member states were considering imposition of a new round of sanctions against Russia over the ongoing Syria crisis at the European Council.

The West blames Moscow and Damascus over alleged bombings of civilian population and armed opposition groups in Syria. Russia and the Syrian government insist that they only strike terrorist positions, while blaming the United States of their inability to differentiate between so-called “moderate opposition” and terrorists.

Moscow did not comment on the issue, noting that it was necessary to wait till the final resolution of the EU leaders was adopted.
