Scots are getting ready to answer the most important question for their nation in last 300 years – whether Scotland should become an independent country.

EDINBURGH, September 18 (RIA Novosti) – Scots are getting ready to answer the most important question for their nation in last 300 years – whether Scotland should become an independent country.

If the majority of Scots vote for independence at the referendum on September 18, Scotland will secede from the United Kingdom on March 24, 2016.

Only one question will be on the ballot papers “Should Scotland be an independent country?”

The polling stations in all 32 Scotland’s local authority areas will open at 7 a.m. local time (06:00 GMT) and close at 10 p.m. local time (21:00 GMT).

4.29 million people aged 16 or over, or 97 percent of the region’s potential voters, have registered to participate in the referendum. About 700,000 people have already given their votes via mail. They started sending the filled ballot papers since late August.

Only permanent residents of Scotland are eligible to take part in the referendum. People of Scottish origin who do not reside in the region will not get the right to vote.

The first results on most of the Scotland’s local authority areas are expected to be known at about 7 a.m. local time (6:00 GMT) on Friday.

Scotland will proclaim independence if 51 percent of those who come to referendum, vote “Yes”.
