BEIJING, August 28 (RIA Novosti) - Chinese President Xi Jinping thanked Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states for their cooperation at a meeting with the countries’ general staff chiefs on Thursday.

“Military cooperation between SCO member states has been progressing well lately,” Xi said.

Earlier on Thursday, SCO national military delegations discussed the situation in Afghanistan and in the Middle East.

The meeting included general staff chiefs from Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The military delegations have agreed on the importance of strengthening peace and stability in the region and advancing joint counter-terrorism activities.

“The situation in Afghanistan and Iraq was the centerpiece of the discussion about regional security problems. Our major concern is the possible destabilization of the region after the pullout of the International Security Assistance Force from Afghanistan,” Russian General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov noted.

“We have also discussed the situation in the Middle East. Our stances on that match. Forceful actions do not bring about positive results and lead to dramatic consequences for countries in the region,” Gerasimov added.

Chinese General Staff Chief Fang Fenghui noted the aggravation of the situation in Afghanistan, saying "The terrorists are infiltrating Central Asia at a fast pace,” and that he sees no good alternatives.

“Promotion of democracy by certain countries has provoked a new round of color revolutions, straining international relations,” Fenghui added.

On Friday, the general staff chiefs are scheduled to visit the final stage of “Peace Mission-2014,” joint SCO military drills involving around 7,000 troops. The Russian military brought four Sukhoi Su-24 “Frogfoot” attack planes, eight Mil Mi-17 “Hip” helicopters, BM-21 “Grad” multiple rocket launchers and other hardware.
