"As this report clearly outlines, the stakes involved in water disputes are high … Resolving these disputes peacefully is of critical importance," the Secretary-General's Special Representative for the country, Tadamichi Yamamoto, said in a news release.
The report, titled "Water Rights: An Assessment of Afghanistan's Legal Framework Governing Water for Agriculture report" emphasizes the importance of water to the economy of the country and analyzes formal and informal means of water-related disputes resolutions. The report also contains practical recommendations to facilitate the resolution mechanisms, including further elaboration of 2009 Water Law, improvement of coordination of water resource programs and other.
Over 80 percent of Afghan citizens earn their living from the agricultural sector. Rural communities depend on permanent access to water for growing the crops and nourishing the livestock.
