Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered his condolences to Israel with the death of former president Shimon Peres, noting his achievement toward peace settlement in the Middle East, the Kremlin said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Peres passed away at the age of 93 in a clinic near Tel Aviv earlier in the day after spending approximately two weeks in a stroke-induced coma.

"Vladimir Putin highly appreciated Shimon Peres' personal contribution to the efforts of achieving a peaceful settlement in the Middle East, which has been appreciated by the international community as evidenced by the Nobel Peace Price awarded to him," the Kremlin said.

Peres was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994. His 66-year political career included two prime ministerial terms, two terms as interim prime minister and a presidential stint in 2007-14.
