Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has threatened to jail representatives of the country’s opposition who were attempting to impeach him.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – On Tuesday, the opposition-led National Assembly voted to initiate impeachment proceedings against Maduro, claiming he had violated democracy, to which the president accused lawmakers of trying to stage a parliamentary coup.

"If they carry out the alleged impeachment, which is not envisaged by our constitution, the prosecution may file a suit with courts of justice and put all those who violate the constitution in prison, even if they are lawmakers," Maduro said on Friday, as quoted by the MDZ daily.

The following day, opposition leader Henrique Capriles initiated a large-scale peaceful protest across the country to defend the nation’s right to a referendum on Maduro's recall. Numerous people were injured, while a police officer was killed.
