Austria Elections: Hofer's Win to Help 'Russia, US Move Away From Cold War'
VIENNA (Sputnik) Both candidates running for Austria’s presidency, Green-backed economist and former Social Democrat Alexander Van der Bellen and Freedom Party’s Norbert Hofer, cast their ballots on Sunday, local media reported.

Hofer, 45, and his wife came to the polling station in his home town of Pinkafeld in the Burgenland region. The spouses later attended the Evangelical Sunday service.

Van der Bellen, 72, voted in one of the Viennese school in the sixth district of the city. The candidate also came to the station with his wife and is currently going for a dinner with his family and friends.

The presidential rerun was called after Austria’s top court overturned the results of the May election over postal vote irregularities following an appeal from the far-right Freedom Party.

May’s poll was won by Van der Bellen who defeated Hofer in the runoff by just 31,000 votes. The turnout was estimated at 72 percent, or almost 4.4 million.

Earlier on Sunday, Heinz Fischer, Austria’s former president, and Eva Glawischnig, the Greens' federal spokeswoman, cast their ballots as well.
