Peasant and Greens Union Preliminary Wins Lithuanian Parliamentary Elections

The agrarian party Peasant and Greens Union won the Lithuanian parliamentary elections with 54 seats.

VILNIUS (Sputnik) — The agrarian party Peasant and Greens Union, according to the preliminary results, won the Lithuanian parliamentary elections with 54 seats, the electoral committee said Monday.

"The Peasant and Greens Union party led by  Ramunas Karbauskis, according to preliminary results in 1,922 constituencies ensures 54 mandates," the statement said.

Since two candidates were elected as independent candidates but included on the list in multi-mandate constituencies as the Peasant and Greens Union candidates, the party will have 56 mandates in the new parliament.

According to the election committee, the center-right party Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats led by Gabrielius Landsbergis received 31 seats in parliament, Social Democratic Party (SDP) headed by the current Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius received 17 mandates.

After the first round the elections, Homeland Union — Lithuanian Christian Democrats party was leading with with 42 candidates in the second round and the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union was in the second place with 40 candidates, whereas the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party had only 21.  The Lithuanian parliament sits 141 members.

In the previous parliamentary elections in 2012, the SDP won 38 seats and was able to form coalition with three other parties, propelling Butkevicius to the prime minister position.
