China is ready to expand bilateral trade in agriculture with Russia, Xinhua News Agency reported Monday, citing China’s Ministry of Commerce.

MOSCOW, August 18 (RIA Novosti) – China is ready to expand bilateral trade in agriculture with Russia, Xinhua News Agency reported Monday, citing China’s Ministry of Commerce.

"Last year, Chinese companies exported $2.1 billion in agricultural products to Russia. China is ready to further work with Russia to expand bilateral trade in agricultural products," ministry spokesperson Shen Danyang said Monday.

"China is willing to expand economic and trade relations with Russia, and will continue to create the conditions for bilateral cooperation in the energy and agricultural sectors, as well as in the fields of infrastructure and technology," Danyang said.

The spokesperson also said that trade in agricultural products between the two neighbors has "great potential for growth" and that "China will support both Chinese and Russian companies in the expansion of agricultural trade between the two countries."

The statement came soon after Russia banned imports of agricultural and food products from the countries that had imposed sanctions on Russia over the Ukrainian crisis for one year.

The list includes meat, fish, poultry and milk products, nuts, fruits and vegetables, but not baby food or other baby-related goods.
