KIEV, August 17 (RIA Novosti) - The international trade turnover of Ukraine's Donetsk Region fell 19 percent in the first quarter of 2014 compared to the same period last year, Donetsk Regional State Administration said Sunday.

The foreign trade turnover amounted to $6.6 billion, while the region's export dropped 14.4 percent to $5.3 billion, and the import lost 34.4 percent to $1.3 billion, said in the statement.

Russia, Italy, Turkey, Egypt and the United States remain the region's main trade partners.

The Donetsk Region contains a fifth of Ukraine's industrial potential, with the iron and steel industry, fuel and energy complexes, chemical and machine-building industries carrying the biggest profits.

The region exports metals, machinery and chemicals.

Since mid-April, Kiev has been conducting a military operation against the southeastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine that had refused to recognize the legitimacy of the new government after the February coup.
