The United States tried to disrupt the signing of a memorandum between Russian and Iranian oil firms vowing tighter sanctions, Russia’s Kommersant newspaper said Wednesday.

MOSCOW, August 6 (RIA Novosti) – The United States tried to disrupt the signing of a memorandum between Russian and Iranian oil firms vowing tighter sanctions, Russia’s Kommersant newspaper said Wednesday.

The Russian business daily cited its source in the nation’s cabinet as saying Washington “attempted to torpedo the deal threatening both Russian and Iranian companies with sanctions.”

The White House has been harshly critical of stronger ties between Moscow and Tehran, saying their economic partnership runs counter to the existing restrictions on Iran and the interim nuclear accords that earlier suspended some of the sanctions, the paper stressed.

“The administration of US President Barack Obama is anxious that profits from its deal with Moscow could undermine Tehran’s resolve to find a long-term compromise solution to its nuclear program,” Kommersant said, adding the US embassy in Russia refused to comment.

The Russian Energy Ministry announced earlier that Russian and Iranian governments had signed a five-year memorandum of understanding on construction and overhaul of the Islamic Republic’s energy production facilities, electric grids, as well as on cooperation in the oil and gas spheres.

The next high-profile meeting between Russian and Iranian delegations is due in Tehran on September 9-10. The meeting will focus on details of cooperation and plans to boost bilateral trade contacts.
