MOSCOW, April 29 (RIA Novosti) – A fresh round of deadly tornadoes swept through the American Midwest and South after storms began on Sunday, bringing the overall death toll to over two dozen, New York Daily News reported Tuesday.

Most of the damage from Sunday’s storm was in Arkansas, where a tornado killed at least 15 people. Late Monday, Mississippi officials reported seven deaths after 12 twisters touched down in the state. At least two others were killed in Alabama. One person was also killed in Oklahoma, and another in Iowa, as up to 31 tornadoes tore through the area.

In Alabama, a tornado struck the Limestone area. According to representatives of the county, quoted by the agency, six people have fallen victim to the natural disaster. In the neighboring state of Mississippi a tornado hit the Tupelo area. A local coroner confirmed one fatality. Winston County, hit by a tornado, has confirmed the death of five people.

At least 28 people have died in the numerous tornadoes that have hit the central part of the US since the end of last week. Several southern states are still under a tornado watch.

A state of emergency has been declared throughout the entire state of Mississippi. North Carolina also introduced a state of emergency for four counties as last Friday the region witnessed several tornadoes, damaging or destroying at least 200 houses.
