Libyan rebel troops have captured a major military base that defends Tripoli, as clashes and protests raged in the streets of the capital on Sunday, world media reported.

Fresh clashes between the rebel troops and security forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi erupted on Sunday on the outskirts of Tripoli. The rebels entered the capital from the sea, coming from the city Misrata.

Libyan Information Minister Moussa Ibrahim called for a ceasefire to find a peaceful way out of this crisis, BBC reported. He noted that if the rebel forces burst in Tripoli, their main purpose will be revenge. And he added that if this happens, NATO would have blood on its hands.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to step down.

Earlier on Sunday Muammar Gaddafi called on his supporters to "march by the millions" and put an end to the rebellion in the country forever.

An uprising which began in Libya in mid-February against Gaddafi's forty-year rule has already claimed thousands of lives. An international military operation "to protect civilians" in Libya began on March 19 following a UN resolution and has been extended until late September.
