PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, October 23 (RIA Novosti) - The overwhelming majority of electors have voted in favor of the Kamchatka Region and the Koryak Autonomous Area (Russia's Far East) to unite into a single Federation member, the regional electoral commission said Sunday.
The commission said 82.14% voted for and 17.31% against the unification of Kamchatka and Koryakia, after 36.53% of referendum ballots were checked in the Kamchatka Region.
On Sunday, the Kamchatka Region and the Koryak Autonomous Area held a referendum on their merger into a single Federation member.
