Seven commissions for elections to the Ukrainian parliament (Verkhovna Rada) have been opened in prison camps and detention centers.

KIEV, October 26 (RIA Novosti) – Polls have opened in prison camps and detention centers in Ukraine's Kiev Region for nearly 5,000 people to vote in early parliamentary elections, the State Penitentiary Service said in a press statement Sunday.

"Seven electoral commissions and special polling stations have started to operate in Kiev Region's prison camps and pretrial detention centers," the statement says.

The polls have opened for Ukrainians to vote in 424 members of parliament — 225 of them from party lists and 199 in single-candidate constituencies. The electoral threshold is 5 percent.

The last election took place in October 2012. On August 26 Poroshenko dissolved the Verkhovna Rada and declared an early parliamentary vote, saying that the composition of the parliament, elected under the presidency of ousted Viktor Yanukovych, was no longer relevant to the existing political situation.
