Ebola Death Toll Surpasses 4,900 of Nearly 10,000 Cases: WHO

The Ebola death toll has risen to 4,922, while the number of confirmed, probable and suspected cases of the disease is at 10,141, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported Saturday.

MOSCOW, October 25 (RIA Novosti) - The Ebola death toll has risen to 4,922, while the number of confirmed, probable and suspected cases of the disease is at 10,141, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported Saturday.

According to the WHO situation report, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone are placed under the category of countries with "widespread and intense transmission." A total of 4,912 deaths and 10,114 Ebola cases have been registered in these three countries.

Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Spain and the United States are placed under the category of countries that had "initial cases or with localized transmission".

The Ebola virus is transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of those infected. The incubation period from time of infection to symptoms is 2 to 21 days.

The current Ebola outbreak began in southern Guinea in the beginning of this year and is the largest epidemic of the virus to date.

Mali confirmed its first case of Ebola on Thursday of a child who contracted the disease in Guinea and died on Friday.
