MOSCOW, October 24 (RIA Novosti) – Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel during a phone conversation discussed the importance of reaching an agreement on gas deliveries with Ukraine, the Kremlin said.

“The importance of reaching an agreement on the topic of gas was emphasized. Hope was expressed that during the next round of trilateral consultations between representatives from Russia, Ukraine and the European Union on October 29 in Brussels will bring results,” the Kremlin statement reads.

In June, Russian energy giant Gazprom switched Ukraine to a prepayment system for gas deliveries in light of its massive gas debt in excess of $5 billion.

In September, Moscow and the European Commission proposed a so-called winter package, which stipulated that Ukraine pay $3.1 billion of its debt to Russia by the end of the year in exchange for gas deliveries during winter months.

After October 21 trilateral gas talks in the Belgian capital, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak confirmed that Ukraine had agreed to pay $385 per 1,000 cubic meters of Russian gas for the winter period. According to the minister, the only unresolved issue left is Ukraine’s ability to find financing for the debt payoff and to ensure future payments on time.
