MOSCOW, October 24 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian who was captured and held for years in detention in Afghanistan will be sent to the United States to stand trial, The Washington Post reported.

Irek Hamidullan is suspected of fighting alongside insurgents in Afghanistan and leading several deadly attacks on the US troops. However, the exact charges to be pressed against Hamidullan are still unknown, the newspaper said Thursday.

Hamidullan is the first foreign fighter to be sent from Afghanistan to the United States to be tried, according to the newspaper.

It took several months for the Congress to decide whether or not to bring the fighter to the Unites States. The newspaper noted that the transfer of Hamidullan will come as a step forward for the Pentagon in its attempts to empty the detention center for foreign fighters located near Bagram, Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

A number of third-country nationals are still held at the Bagram prison, who are similarly being considered to be moved to the United States to face prosecution.
