US Calls on Libya to Rein in Militias

WASHINGTON, October 23 (RIA Novosti) - Libya must immediately control militia groups and engage in political dialogue because no military solution can resolve the country's issues, US State Department Spokesperson Marie Harf said.

"We would reiterate that there's no military solution to Libya's problems here. And their problems are political, mainly, and violence won't solve them. As I said yesterday, to end the current crisis Libyans must immediately rein in militias, cease violence, and engage in the productive political dialogue led by their UN special representative," Harf stated Wednesday.

The unsettled disputes in Libya's new government have created a diarchy, in which powers are shared by the elected parliament and Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thani on one side, and by the pro-Islamic General National Congress and its self-proclaimed Prime Minister Omar al-Hasi on another. However, some parts of the country are not controlled by any of the central powers.

Libya is currently facing its worst wave of violence since the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi. The country has seen violent clashes between numerous militias, armed with weapons, seized from government ammunition depots.

According to the Libya Body Count data, the violence in the country has claimed the lives of over 1,700 people in 2014 alone.
