MOSCOW, October 23 (RIA Novosti) - Michael Zehaf-Bibeau has been named as a potential suspect in the Wednesday shooting in Ottawa, Reuters stated Thursday referring to a Canadian police source.

According to media records, Zehaf-Bibeau, 32, is reportedly of Algerian descent and was born in Canada.

The Canadian police earlier refused to reveal the identity of the suspect due to ongoing investigation. The name of the soldier killed was not disclosed either, which the police said was in the name of privacy.

On Wednesday morning, a soldier, guarding the National War Memorial in Ottawa, was shot dead by an unidentified gunman. Shots continued to be fired later at the Canadian Parliament, which is located nearby.

An investigation is currently underway in Ottawa, with residents having been advised not to approach the shooting sites and "stay away from windows and off roofs".

The incident comes just two days after a member of the Canadian Armed Forces was killed in a car attack in the city of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu in Quebec.

Canada's Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Steven Blaney described the attack as being associated with terrorism.
