Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has criticized the United States for an unsuccessful airdrop of weapons in Syria and for the fact that arms ended up in Islamic State (IS) militants' hands.

ANKARA, October 22 (RIA Novosti) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has criticized the United States for an unsuccessful airdrop of weapons in Syria and for the fact that arms ended up in Islamic State (IS) militants' hands.

"This was wrong," Erdogan said on Wednesday in Ankara airport.

"Now it is clear who the support was for," Erdogan added, highlighting that only some of the weapons were received by Kurdish fighters.

On Tuesday, a video was uploaded on Youtube where IS fighters could be seen examining one of the bundles, earlier airdropped by US planes.

Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby admitted that the US weapons could in fact be in militants' hands, but said that Washington needed more time to verify the video.

On Sunday night, several US C-130 aircraft brought weapons, ammunition and medical supplies to Kurdish fighters in order to help them fight against IS, which is laying siege to Kobani on the Turkish-Syrian border.

The IS jihadist group, known for proclaiming hardline Islamic fundamentalism, has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In 2014, it seized vast areas across Iraq and Syria and proclaimed an Islamic caliphate on the territories that have fallen under its control.
