India was re-elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the term 2015-2017 Tuesday.

NEW DELHI, October 21 (RIA Novosti) - India was re-elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the term 2015-2017 Tuesday.

"India is committed supporter for the UN Human Rights system and will continue to work towards further strengthening of the UN Human Rights Council. The promotion and protection of the human rights is ingrained in India's domestic and foreign policies," Permanent Mission of India to the UN said in its statement.

India was re-elected with highest number of votes (162) in the competition for four seats in the Asia-Pacific Group. Other competing countries were Bangladesh, Indonesia, Thailand and Qatar.

The country's term at the UN Human Rights Council comprising 47 nations will end on December 31, 2014.

The UN Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body, promoting and protecting human rights. The General Assembly elects the members for the Council judging by the states' contribution and commitment to the aims of the body. Each seat's term is three years.
