WASHINGTON, October 21 (RIA Novosti) - Firestone Liberia, a Liberian company, has been able to limit the spread of Ebola in a part of the country by building healthcare infrastructure, a report published Tuesday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said.
"I went to see the Firestone hospital in Liberia at the end of August. I saw how careful and meticulous the staff is and how compassionately they care for Ebola patients and their families," CDC Director Tom Frieden said.
"This shows that it's possible to contain Ebola with meticulous attention to detail and care for patients," Frieden added.
The report pointed out that the company's response efforts could also be implemented in other parts of the country.
In April, Firestone Liberia that provides health services to about 80,000 people in the community received its first Ebola patient. The company quickly responded by immediately isolating the patient and establishing an incident management system through the use of active and passive Ebola surveillance measures.
From August 1 to September 23, the Firestone healthcare facility received 71 confirmed and suspected Ebola patients. Of the 51 patients that tested positive for Ebola at the company's healthcare facility 18 survived.
Liberia was one of the first countries that the current outbreak of Ebola spread to after it originated at the end of 2013 in Guinea, later spreading to Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Senegal and Liberia.
According to the most recent estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), 4,555 people have died from the disease, with 9,216 confirmed, probable and suspected Ebola cases.
