New US early warning radar system, aimed to warn about missile launches from North Korea, will be fully functioning before the end of the year, Kyodo news agency reported Tuesday.

TOKYO, October 21 (RIA Novosti) – The second US early warning radar system aimed at protecting Japan from a North Korean missile attack will be fully operational before the end of the year, Kyodo news agency reported Tuesday.

The X-band radar was delivered to the Air Self-Defense Force’s Kyogamisaki Sub-Base in the city of Kyotango in Kyoto Prefecture earlier in the day. The installation of the system, capable of precisely tracking the trajectory of ballistic missiles, is scheduled for Wednesday.

It is the second US missile-defense radar to operate in Japan. In 2006, the United States deployed an AN/TPY-2 radar in Japan’s northern Aomori Prefecture.

Moscow objects US missile defense initiatives, saying they are worsening the global and regional security environment, especially military and nonproliferation processes.
