KHABAROVSK, October 20 (RIA Novosti) – A toddler and his mother in a Russian Far Eastern city both tested negative for the Ebola virus disease after the child was admitted with a fever following their trip to Nigeria, a spokesperson in the region told RIA Novosti Monday.

"Lab results showed no trace of the deadly virus in the woman and her child. They have already been discharged from hospital," the source said.

The woman and her 1.9-year child were hospitalized in Komsomolsk-on-Amur in Russia's Rar Eastern Khabarovsk Territory after returning from Nigeria, a country in West Africa where there have been reports of Ebola.

The toddler had a fever, but doctors said they observed no other symptoms consistent with the lethal disease, which has already killed thousands in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Pending lab results, the two were admitted to an infectious diseases hospital and placed in an isolation ward with a separate entrance.

The child has been confirmed to have an acute viral respiratory infection, the source in the regional government said.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 4,500 people have died from the current Ebola outbreak, with over 9,000 cases confirmed or suspected.

There is currently no officially approved medication for the disease, but several countries are now working on developing a drug to halt the virus spreading further. Earlier this month, the Russian Health Minister confirmed that Russia is now ready to test its Ebola vaccine on primates and may soon start clinical trials.
