Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi salutes victory of his party Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) in elections in two states.

MOSCOW, October 19 (RIA Novosti) - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) won elections in two Indian states Sunday, in what Modi referred to as “historic results”.

“Historic results! A matter of immense happiness and pride for BJP. I salute our Karyakartas [personnel] for their tireless efforts,” Modi wrote on his twitter account.

The party won in the northern industrial state of Haryana and emerged as the largest party in the western financial hub, Maharashtra, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

According to WSJ, BJP was leading with 120 seats out of the 288 state assembly seats in Maharashtra, with the major rival, Congress party winning only 47 seats. In Haryana state, BJP gained 67 of 90 seats, making it the leading party in the state for the first time.

India's electoral commission is yet to declare the official results.

“Long before these elections, our Prime Minister said that we have work toward a Congress-free India. Slowly but surely, that is happening,” India’s commerce minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, was quoted as saying by the WSJ.

The BJP won May’s national elections by Modi’s promise for economic reforms, many yet to be implemented.

India elects officials at the federal, state and local levels. The state elections in India is when the electorate chooses the members of the State Assembly. They are held every 5 years in all 29 Indian States.
