Canada is set to provide the World Health Organization (WHO) with 800 vials of its experimental Ebola vaccine, the country’s Public Health Agency said Saturday.

MOSCOW, October 18 (RIA Novosti) - Canada is set to provide the World Health Organization (WHO) with 800 vials of its experimental Ebola vaccine, the country’s Public Health Agency said Saturday.

“The Public Health Agency of Canada is supplying the vaccine to the WHO in its role as the international coordinating body for the Ebola outbreak, so that the vaccine can be made available as an international resource,” the Public Health Agency of Canada said in a statement.

The vaccines, which are the product of “more than 10 years of scientific research”, will be sent in three separate shipments “due to the challenges in moving a vaccine that must be kept at a very low temperature at all times”. The first shipment is to be sent to the World Health Organization in Geneva on October 20, the agency said.

The largest Ebola outbreak in history is currently taking place in West Africa. Over 4,500 people have lost their lives in the epidemic and nearly 9,200 cases of confirmed or suspected infection have been registered. Though there is no officially approved cure for the disease, several countries are working on developing Ebola vaccines.
