Russia is planning to provide more humanitarian aid to the Ebola-ridden countries of West Africa, said the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations.

UNITED NATIONS, October 18 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is planning to provide more humanitarian aid to the Ebola-ridden countries of West Africa, said the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations.

"We plan to deliver more humanitarian aid, medical equipment, medicines and teams of [healthcare] professionals to aid the UN programs in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone ," Dmitry Maksimychev said Friday at the UN General Assembly session on Africa's development, adding that Russian doctors are already fighting Ebola in West Africa

Earlier this week the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Russia will allocate a total of 779.4 million rubles ($19 million) to fight the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

On Monday, President Vladimir Putin said that Russian experts are studying the possibility of deploying planes with special medical equipment, including life-support capsules for transporting Ebola-infected patients.

According to the latest figures, released by the World Health Organization (WHO) on October 17, the current Ebola outbreak has claimed the lives of 4,555 people, with a total number of 9,216 confirmed, probable and suspected infection cases. There is no officially approved cure for the disease, but several countries are currently working on developing Ebola vaccines, with Russia planning to introduce three vaccines within the next six months.
