MOSCOW, October 16 (RIA Novosti) - The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued a public advisory on Hurricane Gonzalo, expected to hit the Island of Bermuda later Thursday or early Friday.

"A turn towards the north-northeast with an increase in forward speed is expected later today [Thursday]," the NHC forecast said.

"Hurricane conditions are expected to reach Bermuda on Friday with tropical storm conditions beginning late tonight or early Friday morning," it added, with rains of three to six inches expected over the island.

The hurricane is also expected to cause significant coastal flooding with large and destructive waves near the coast of the island.

The NHC has placed the hurricane at a dangerous category four for the second time in two days, as it sustains winds of up to 140 kilometers per hour (87 miles per hour) towards Bermuda.

The government said it would close the Island's international airport on Thursday night, according to a report by The Independent.

Meanwhile, Bermuda is still dealing with the aftermath of Sunday's Tropical Storm Fay which hit Bermuda at winds of up to 112 kilometers per hour (67 miles per hour) which brought down trees and left 1,000 homes without power.

The government also called out 200 soldiers of the Bermuda Regiment to help with cleanup efforts on the island.

Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory in the North Atlantic Ocean, located off the east coast of the United States, with a population of about 65,000 people.
