The European Commission (EC) published a statement Thursday confirming the commitment of 100 European cities to address climate change concerns in an official signing ceremony where the mayors of the various cities across Europe pledged their dedication to the scheme.

MOSCOW, October 16 (RIA Novosti) - The European Commission (EC) published a statement Thursday confirming the commitment of 100 European cities to address climate change concerns in an official signing ceremony where the mayors of the various cities across Europe pledged their dedication to the scheme.

"When we launched Mayors Adapt in March, we aimed to build a network of at least 50 cities by the end of the year. We already have 100 and more are queuing up to join," the European Commissioner for Climate Action, Connie Hedegaard, who hosted the event, said in the statement.

"Our cities are building up their resilience against climate change. That is great news for citizens and businesses. Good preparation will be much cheaper than cleaning up afterwards and it can save lives," she added.

The Mayors Adapt initiative, launched in 2014, focuses on measures needed to adapt to climate change. It came after the Covenant of Mayors initiative aimed at cutting greenhouse emissions.

"As major centers of population and infrastructure, cities are particularly vulnerable to extreme weather events and the adverse effects of climate change," the EC statement said, emphasizing that local authorities played a key role in implementing the measures "to mitigate and adapt to a changing climate".

Among the signatories were Barcelona, Copenhagen, Frankfurt and Glasgow, while New York's former mayor, Michael Bloomberg, gave a video address.
