MOSCOW, October 16 (RIA Novosti) – Angola, Venezuela, Malaysia and New Zealand have been elected new non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council for 2015 and 2016, the United Nations reported Thursday.
The remaining seat in the Western European and Other States Group is to be taken either by Spain or Turkey depending on the General Assembly vote.
Lithuania, Chad, Chile, Jordan and Nigeria will remain on the Council as non-permanent members until the end of 2015.
There are five permanent member states in the Security Council including Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom and the United States. More than 60 UN member countries have never been members of the Security Council.
The UN Security Council is responsible for the maintenance of international peace and security and can in certain cases resort to imposing sanctions or authorizing the use of force in order to protect international security.
