BRUSSELS, October 15 (RIA Novosti) - The European Union has condemned the Iraqi killing by the Islamic State (IS) of two local journalists and has offered its condolences to the families of the killed, the statement posted Wednesday on the EU's External Action Service's (EEAS) Twitter account said.

"EU condemns ISIL killing of journalists Mohanad al-Akidi of Sada news & Raad Mohamed al-Azzawi, a cameraman for Sama Salah Aldeen TV," the statement read.

Earlier this week, it was reported that al-Akidi, who was a correspondent for Sada News in Iraq's city of Mosul, was shot dead on Monday. The IS militants reportedly abducted him in July. Another victim, al-Azzawi, was beheaded last Friday after having been held captive for one month.

The IS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014, the group extended its attacks to northern and western Iraq, declaring a caliphate on the territories over which it had control.

To impede the military advancement of the group, the United States launched airstrikes against the jihadists' positions in Iraq and Syria in mid-September, with some other countries such as France and the United Kingdom joining later to form an airstrike coalition to quash the militants.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Bahrain and Qatar have also been reported to have carried out airstrikes in partnership with the United States against the Islamic State.
