North and South Korea have begun bilateral general-level talks in the border village of Panmunjom, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported Wednesday.

MOSCOW, October 15 (RIA Novosti) - North and South Korea have begun bilateral general-level talks in the border village of Panmunjom, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported Wednesday.

The sides could be discussing "how to relieve inter-Korean military tensions that have heightened recently," a source familiar with the situation is quoted as saying by the agency.

According to Yonhap, North and South Korea exchanged fire last week after a North Korean naval vessel crossed the Northern Limit Line.

A few days earlier, the sides reportedly exchanged fire after South Korean activists sent balloons carrying some 200,000 anti-Pyongyang leaflets to the territory of North Korea.

The two Koreas last held working-level military talks in 2011 and general-level talks in 2007, Yonhap said.
