MOSCOW, October 14 (RIA Novosti) - Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian has rejected Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Saud Faisal's suggestion that Iran should withdraw its troops from Syria to facilitate the settlement of the conflict in the country, the Elaph newspaper reported Tuesday.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran is an important country of the region that is fighting terrorism. The Iranian government will help the nations of Iraq and Syria in accordance with international laws," Abdollahian was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

Syria and Iraq are currently battling the advance of the Islamic State (IS) extremist group that has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012 and launched attacks in Iraq in June 2014. Upon capturing large parts of the two countries, the group announced the establishment of a caliphate on the territories under its control.

The United States formed an international anti-IS coalition that has been conducting airstrikes against IS positions since September. Prior to the establishment of the coalition, the United States carried out airstrikes against IS militants in Iraq in August.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei has said that the United States and the United Kingdom are responsible for the rise of the IS. He has also turned down a proposal from the United States to coordinate steps to fight against the terrorist group.
