MOSCOW, October 14 (RIA Novosti) - A Sudanese doctor who became infected with the Ebola virus while working for the United Nations (UN) in Liberia died after being transferred to a clinic in Leipzig, Germany, The Telegraph reported Tuesday.
"The patient sick with Ebola fever died during the night in St Georg Clinic in Leipzig. Despite intensive medical measures and maximum efforts by the medical team, the 56-year-old UN employee succumbed to the serious infectious disease," the St. Georg clinic in Leipzig was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
The UN worker was admitted into the clinic's isolation ward on October 9, The Telegraph reported. According to the clinic, the hospital's specialists focused on the treatment of complications, stabilizing vital functions and supportive therapy.
The St. Georg clinic added that there was no danger of the disease spreading following the patient's hospital admission.
The patient is the third to have been treated from the Ebola virus in Germany and the first to have died of the illness in the country. A Ugandan doctor and World Health organization (WHO) employee is currently being treated in Frankfurt for Ebola while another WHO employee has been released from a Hamburg clinic in good health after five weeks of treatment.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates the death toll resulting from the worst outbreak of Ebola in history to have reached 4,033. Some 2,316 people have died from the Ebola virus in Liberia, the hardest-hit West African country. The death toll in Sierra Leone and Guinea totals nearly 1,000 respectively, according to the latest WHO update.
