UN's Security Council has welcomed the appointment of UN envoy Khaled Bahah as Yemen's new prime minister.

UNITED NATIONS, October 14 (RIA Novosti) - UN's Security Council has welcomed the appointment of UN envoy Khaled Bahah as Yemen's new prime minister.

The Security Council on Monday agreed to a Press Elements statement that "welcomed the nomination of Khaled Bahah as the new prime minister today, and urged the Yemeni authorities to expedite the process of reforms, including army and security sector reform."

The Security Council's members "made clear their strong support for President Hadi and his efforts to implement the Gulf Cooperation Council Initiative and its Implementation Mechanism and the Peace and National Partnership Agreement."

Bahah, Yemen's United Nations envoy, was named by President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi as the country's new prime minister on Monday. Hadi's first nominee for Prime Minister, Ahmed Awadh Bin Mubarak, was opposed by the Houthi rebels. The Houthis welcomed Bahah's appointment.

The UN Security Council members "condemned the growing number of terrorist attacks, carried out or sponsored by Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and expressed their determination to address this threat."

The Council "recalled the provisions of resolution 2140 (2014), where sanctions could be taken against such individuals, and agreed to consider urgently evidence provided to them with a view to possible designations of those, who threaten the peace, security and stability of Yemen."

Yemen is currently in a state of turmoil, with the Houthis, a Zaidi Shia insurgent group, controlling large parts of the capital, Sanaa.

The Houthis have accused the incumbent government in Sanaa of discrimination against Shiites and have been carrying out protests against the government since mid-August, calling for economic and political reform.
