MOSCOW, October 14 (RIA Novosti) - Two people have been killed and more than 90 have sustained injuries in Japan as powerful storm Vongfong sweeps through the country, Japan's public broadcaster NHK said Tuesday.

Two elderly men have lost their lives in the storm, NHK reported. A 90-year-old man was found dead in an irrigation canal in the Tottori prefecture. In the Ehime prefecture, a 72-year-old man drowned after driving into a pond. One person remains unaccounted for.

According to the broadcaster, more than 90 people have sustained injuries in the storm, which is now off the coast in Japan's northeast. Over 500,000 people have been advised to evacuate.

Japan's Meteorological Agency has downgraded Vongfong from a typhoon to a severe tropical storm. However, it is still packing winds of up to 108 kilometers (67 miles) per hour. Some 80 domestic flights scheduled for Tuesday have been canceled, NHK said.
