MOSCOW, October 9 (RIA Novosti) - The number of dengue fever cases in China have exceeded 27,000, Xinhua reported Thursday citing official records.
"We have also set up a joint mechanism with Hong Kong and Macao exchanging information every day," Song Shuli, spokeswoman of China's National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) was quoted by Xinhua as telling reporters.
According to the agency, a total of 27,219 people have contracted the disease, with 99 percent of the fever cases reported from Guangdong, Fujian, Yunnan and Guangxi provinces in southern China.
Earlier in September, China's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declared that the country's mosquitoes, whose number is five times larger than usual, are to blame for the outbreak of the fever, while some other researchers stated that rainy weather had also contributed.
It was also reported that the disease cannot be transmitted directly among humans. Fever, headache, regurgitation and muscle pain are said to be among the symptoms of the disease.
