MOSCOW, October 8 (RIA Novosti) – The United States has conducted 9 airstrikes against Islamic State (IS) positions in Syria in the last two days, with the participation of United Arab Emirates aircraft, the US Department of Defense reported on its website Wednesday.

"Four airstrikes south of Kobani destroyed an ISIL armored personnel carrier, destroyed three ISIL armed vehicles and damaged a fourth, and destroyed an ISIL artillery piece. A fifth airstrike, southwest of Kobani, destroyed an ISIL armed vehicle; a sixth airstrike, at the southern edge of Kobani, destroyed an ISIL artillery piece," the report said.

"Two airstrikes northwest of Ar Raqqah successfully struck an active ISIL training camp and associated ISIL fighters. An airstrike northwest of Dayr az Zawr destroyed an ISIL tank," the report added.

According to the Defense Department, the United States used "bomber, fighter and remotely piloted aircraft deployed to the U.S. Central Command area of operations" to conduct the airstrikes, which were carried out with the participation of UAE aircraft.

IS militants have been fighting with Kurdish forces over the Syrian town of Kobani, located on the border with Turkey and also known by its Arabic name of Ayn al-Arab, for three weeks.

On Tuesday, Kurds staged several protests in a number of European cities demanding more support for Kurdish forces fighting the extremists in Syria. Demonstrations have also swept across Turkey with protesters accusing Ankara of its inactivity in the face of the IS offensive.

The IS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014, the group extended its attacks to northern and western Iraq, declaring a caliphate on the territories under its control in both countries.

In August, the United States started launching airstrikes against the IS positions in Iraq. In September, the attacks of the US and its allies were extended to Syria.
