China’s Stance on Hong Kong Remains Unchanged: Deputy Foreign Minister

China's Deputy Foreign Minister Li Baodong has stated that the country's stance on Hong Kong remains unchanged, Xinhua reported Wednesday.

MOSCOW, October 8 (RIA Novosti) - China's Deputy Foreign Minister Li Baodong has stated that the country's stance on Hong Kong remains unchanged, Xinhua reported Wednesday.

"Our stance remains unchanged. We are confident that Hong Kong's future will be even brighter," Li said.

According to the newspaper, Li stressed that the policy of "one country, two systems" has added to Hong Kong's prosperity and stability.

Li made the comment when asked whether or not the upcoming Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit, which will take place in Milan, Italy October 16 through October 17, would address issued related to Hong Kong.

On Monday, thousands gathered in Hong Kong in support of a student demonstration by the Occupy Central movement, also known as Occupy Central with Love and Peace (OCLP), which began on September 26 in protest against Chinese government plans to control the 2017 election in Hong Kong. According to the claims of Occupy Central, China is going back on its word to maintain the city's autonomy under the "one country, two systems" formula.
