MOSCOW, October 8 (RIA Novosti) - The legislative body of Canada approved the participation of the country's military in the battle against the Islamic State (IS) group in Iraq, the BBC reported Wednesday.

Canadian military have been authorized to carry out airstrikes against terrorists in Iraq for six months. The deployment of ground troops has been ruled out.

According to a plan by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Ottawa will send six CF-18 fighter aircraft and some 600 personnel to Iraq, where it had already deployed military advisers.

"If left unchecked this terrorist organisation will grow and grow quickly. They have already voiced their local and international terrorist intentions and identified Canada as a potential target," Harper said, as quoted by the BBC.

The IS extremists have proclaimed a caliphate over the large parts of Syria and Iraq under their control. The United States initiated an international campaign on fighting the IS threat in the Middle East, launching airstrikes in Iraq and Syria. Washington's Arab allies, the United Kingdom and France have joined the US-led air raids.
