Harmony Party Leads in Latvian Parliamentary Elections After 98% of Votes Counted

Social Democratic Party Harmony is leading in Latvian parliamentary elections after 98 percent of the votes have been counted, the country's Central Electoral Commission said on Sunday.

RIGA, October 5 (RIA Novosti) - Social Democratic Party Harmony is leading in Latvian parliamentary elections after 98 percent of the votes have been counted, the country's Central Electoral Commission said on Sunday.

After the votes from 1,000 polling stations out of 1,054 have been counted, the Harmony party is said to have received 23.26 percent of the votes, with the Unity Party taking 21.62 percent, and the Union of Greens and Farmers garnering 19.74 percent.

The turnout of the elections is estimated to be 58.78 percent, which includes polling stations in Latvia, abroad, in penitentiaries and international missions in Afghanistan and the Central African Republic.

The 12 elections to the Saeima, the Latvian parliament, are held in five constituencies, with 100 members of the parliament are to be elected. Latvian citizens who have attained 18 years of age are entitled to participate in the elections.

Submission of lists of candidates for the Saeima elections took place between July 16 and August 5.

Social Democratic Party Harmony is a Latvian center-left political party which stands for protection of national minorities and represents the interests of the country's Russian-speaking population.
