MOSCOW, October 4 (RIA Novosti) - The acting head of the eastern Ukrainian city of Slavyansk in the Donetsk region, Pavel Pridvorov, has resigned, the City Council's website reported on Saturday.

"Acting mayor, city council secretary Pavel Pridvorov filed for early termination of his powers," an official statement said.

Kiev-appointed Mayor Pridvorov filed his resignation on October 3 and by law, it must have been reviewed at a City Council session.

Although Slavyansk was one of the strongholds of the independence supporters in Eastern Ukraine, Kiev authorities regained control of the city in July. City Council Secretary Pridvorov became Mayor of Slavyansk on August 26.

On September 5, a trilateral Contact Group comprised of representatives from Russia, Ukraine, the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) met in Minsk to discuss the situation in Ukraine. The meeting resulted in a series of agreements between the Ukrainian government and the self-proclaimed people's republics of Luhansk and Donetsk including an "all for all" prisoner exchange, additional humanitarian convoys from Russia to eastern Ukraine, and a ceasefire which began the day of the meeting.

On September 19 the Contact Group met again in Minsk and formulated a memorandum outlining nine provisions to regulate the implementation of a ceasefire between Kiev and independence supporters in eastern Ukraine.
